The following is an excerpt from the chapter:
If you look at yourself in the mirror every morning the changes in your
appearance are imperceptible, but if you look at photos of when you were
at school, or on holiday, or had hair, the differences are obvious. The
strange thing is, when you look at photos you get no real sense of how
much time has passed. It’s like some sort of thought dilation. In this
sense evolution and creation are like a young boy and his grandfather
picking through a box of old family photos. The grandson is keen to know
exactly when each photo was taken as he wants to arrange them in some
kind of order, and though the old man has a story for each, he remembers
them all like they were yesterday. Neither is of any constructive help
to the other. |
