The Verdict

The following is an excerpt from the chapter:

Consider the universe from the point of view of an ant. Here is a creature that belongs to a society not far off an idealistic model of our own, but with a community spirit far beyond the expectations of our most prolific leaders. Is the ant aware that humans have a totally different consciousness, that we have observed ants and know that they are any one of several thousand described species, or that we have charted the world we both inhabit to such an extent that scientists estimate the total number of ants to be in the order of quadrillions? The answer to all the questions is almost certainly “No”, but we cannot be 100% certain. If the ant is aware of our presence it is probably as some indescribably large object that keeps blocking its path, often intentionally and with the sole purpose of destroying all of its hard work. To draw a parallel between man and God might invite similar hostility, but there are numerous times when we question His ways, how He could let a disaster happen and show inferior beings such little compassion.
